Now, from a general sense, a chicken will lay an egg every day for 12 days. Then take a day of rest.
When we had our first flock, that's about what they did, give or take. We never knew who was laying and who was resting - our nesting boxes are set up so that multiple chickens can lay in one box. Anyway, during that time, we were averaging 6-9 eggs per day. That's a lot of eggs, considering 3/4 of my family is allergic. Ha! And I wonder why people think I'm nuts. My family is allergic to almost everything. EVERYTHING. (even AIR, it's true - Google "Cold Uticaria") It deserves a post all its own :)
But, we were selling and Steve was eating and things were good (he went through what I joke and call a "lifestyle change" and ate like 6 egg whites per day and actually weighed his food - he lost 40lbs in like a month, not kidding). ANYWAY, we introduced some new chicks into our flock and had to keep everyone on chick food instead of laying food (until they were at least 16 weeks old), so production slowed quite a bit for a while. We were getting anywhere between 3 and 6 eggs per day, but more so on the low end. We had about 20 chickens at the time.
As of lately, however, we've been getting 10+ eggs per day. Just the other day I got 11 and yesterday I got 12! They vary in size and it's hilarious watching Steve crack a tiny egg to fry up and eat.
The new chicks are starting to lay and it's so exciting!
Temps went from -30 with windchill, to 62 degrees yesterday.
My entire yard is a disgusting swamp.
But I got 12 eggs today!
Got 11 two days ago
Check out the size difference between a 2 year old pullet and a 1 year old pullet.
The mild temps have allowed the chickens to go outside of the coop and forage. They were at every square inch of our pasture during the break in weather - and 5 chickens even got out and were free ranging our entire yard for most of the day. C'mon Spring! We're ready for you!
