First, he read my blog on our mudroom addition, and told me it got him motivated to finish up the trim work. So he worked on that late last week and into the weekend. All door frames and trim molding were added and painted. It definitely has a more "complete" feel to it. Next up is a barn door! I'll document that process as well in a separate post.
Then he started thinking about the transition from the mudroom, into our kitchen. There's a small hallway here that leads into our kitchen.
He patched the walls to get ready for sanding.
Patching up the walls
Prepping the walls for sanding and painting.
We were letting the mud dry, before coming back to sand. We found this:
That little stinker wrote her name in the wet mud!
Uh-oh, the face when daddy asks "Ava, did you do this?"
In fairness to her, we did NOT tell them not to touch it. We just figured they'd know better. Haha! Lesson learned. Don't trust the 4 year old.
We will be painting the walls the same grey color as the loft/office space in just this small hallway. Steve will work on the transition from that flooring to the disgusting linoleum.
Speaking of flooring and transitions...we got going on our living room/kitchen floor transition. The owners who lived here prior to us had put a wall up between the kitchen and living room. We actually asked them if they had ever thought about removing the wall and they told us "we put it up" - HUH?
We much prefer the "open concept" look, so we took the wall down about 6 months after we moved in. And then....we kinda just left it like that. First of all, new floors for the entire first floor of our house is going to be pricey. Like $15,000 pricey. We just don't have it now and will have to make do.
We have one large box left of the Brazilian Cherry floors that are currently in our dining room and living room. Steve made a cut to even out the transition area and we plan on putting down 3 rows of hardwood to make up the difference. Then add a transition piece over the linoleum. This is the short-term solution for now, until we have money for floors.
Who uses this kind of linoleum anyway??? It's super old school. And gross.
Having the wall up was so bizarre. It made everything feel so much smaller. However, now that there's no wall there, I kind of understand why the previous owners had a wall. It can get loud. When we had our old dishwasher, I definitely got it. That thing was LOUD. You couldn't even hear the TV!
I would've opted to get a new dishwasher than putting up a wall, but that's just me. Once we got a new dishwasher, the noise has not been an issue at all.
Here is the completed transition! I think Steve did a great job with this.
I'm not sure why we waited 4 years to actually fix this.
We literally used duct tape to keep the linoleum down. smh.
