Prepping for Spring

It's getting close! The weather feels like it finally broke the last few days. Regardless of whether or not the weather is cooperating with us, it's definitely starting to feel like spring on the INSIDE of our house!

Our baby chicks are now 4 and 5 weeks old. I call this the "ugly teenage years" look. So awkward-looking!

You can see that their feathers are pretty much all in now. The 4 weekers are somewhere in the back, their feathers are also starting to come in, but they still have another week or two to go.

Our plan is to move the 5 weekers (they will be close to 6 weeks this weekend) to the small coop outside. Now that they have feathers and the weather broke, they will be able to stay warm. We do have an extra light out there too, just in case.

We'll keep the 4 weekers (soon to be 5 weeks) in the tub another week or so. But, we will be going back to Runnings this weekend to pick up maybe 8 more chicks.

I found out this morning that our chickens are actually able to get out under the gate. We have goat fencing that goes to the top of the fence down to the grass, so chickens can't crawl under. I never thought they'd go under the gate itself. I'm not sure why we didn't think of it.

So, I'm betting that's how we lost so many chickens recently. Hei-Hei was not one to fly over. She just never did it. Now I'm thinking she didn't and went under. Ugh.

So I blocked it for today with some wood beams, but we need to find a solution. ASAP. I'm super paranoid each day that we might lose another chicken. I can't take the heartache!

In gardening news, our plants are doing great!

Zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes and cauliflower sprouted!

Pumpkins need to be transferred STAT. I will move them to another indoor grow area until the risk of frost is gone. I likely can't plant them outside for at least another 4 weeks.
