ANYWAY.
Baby chicks move out - they stayed inside most of Saturday - a little freaked out and traumatized. Like WTF are we doing out here?
Here is their set up.
So you can see how the two are set up in relation to each other.
They ventured outside later in the day and by Sunday were out sunning themselves!
Since we decided to move them all out - the little ones were ready, although I probably would've waited another week if it were me - we made room for new babies!
We got 8 more Silver Laced Wyandottes and 2 white crested blue polishes, and 2 white crested blacks. They are hilarious with a poof of hair on top! We weren't planning to get 12 more...I don't think. At least I wasn't. I'm not complaining!
The ones with the poof of hair are the ones that have the white heads. Hilarious. They are "vulnerable" because they can't see well because of having feathers in their eyes. I'm hoping that since they will be around 20+ other "hardier" birds, that they will be ok.
So funny!
The weather was super nice today - I'd say 65 and partly sunny? It didn't rain! I thought it was supposed to rain and be shitty all weekend. I'm so glad I was wrong. We took the opportunity to really clean up around here. Props to Steve who did the big Spring poop pick up. Ugh. Probably the WORST chore - to be honest, we don't clean it up nearly as much as we should. Especially in the winter. Probably 2-3 times over the winter? So the springtime cleanup is usually a beast.
But he got through it and the yard looks so much better. He also fixed our broken fence/gate so that I don't have to move an Adirondack chair and a loose piece of fencing to get out of the gate (and put it right back so the dogs can't get out). Suuuuper convenient for the last 3+ weeks. But the ground was frozen, so it's not like he could've fixed it anyway.
While he was out doing all of his chores, I took the time and moved my seedlings to transplant pots so that they will be ready to move outside in about 4 weeks.
I didn't have a large tray and I didn't want to buy one.
Nothing special, I just asked Steve to pick up something organic.
My peat moss pots
The pumpkins were starting to get rough. They needed to be moved ASAP!
Check out those roots!
Trying to keep them in the sun (there's only one set of windows in our basement)
My view as I was doing this - Steve was moving stuff; I heard the girls giggling and running around; birds were chirping. It's SPRING! It's definitely nice having a walkout basement.
It doesn't feel quite so basement-y.
Zucchini/yellow squash, watermelon, pumpkin, broccoli.
Planted new Japanese cucumbers and regular cucumbers
I plan to move the guys from the pool outside in about 4 weeks. Then these guys (above) should be ready to be transferred to the peat moss pots. I also plan to buy some plants when they become available. This is the most success I've had so far with seeds, but it's also the first time I'm committing to it.
The Company Store right in the middle of Cheshire usually has a tiny greenhouse that has a few plants for sale but I haven't seen them yet this season.
