Gypsy Moth Infestation

You guys.

These fucking moths are out of fucking control.

They are SO GROSS.

It started earlier in the season when I noticed tons of itty bitty caterpillars literally flying through the air.

I looked it up and saw that this invasive species is infesting our region!

So of course these caterpillars matured and turned into moths.

Several weeks ago I straight lost my mind and in an enraged manner, took a torch and started lighting these fuckers on fire.

Not that it'd help the overall population, but it helped my mental state.

And now?

Well now it's fucking EGG-LAYING season.

So these females are now docking on our tree trunks and laying their eggs.

OMG.

So I read up on what to do. I mean, living on 8 acres is NOT going to help. There's no way I can take care of every tree that's been affected.

But I did go out and do what was suggested.

Scraping the eggs into soapy water and leave them in the water or 48 hours. Scraping them to the ground won't work because apparently they can still hatch NEXT YEAR.

Good Lord.

Absolutely fucking DISGUSTING.

I scraped all the trees out front that I could reach. It was gross because it was windy. So the eggs would blow off my scraper thing and I'd have to dig around the ground to get them. And try not to get them in my face or hair. (I'm gagging just thinking about it).

I will continue to do this until it no longer makes sense. Even if it's just a little - I feel like every little bit helps.

These Gypsy Moths are destroying my trees. They have defoliated my oaks and maples in my yard. Some trees I read can withstand a few years of defoliation and still survive, but there are some trees that won't survive one year of defoliation and will die off.

It's suspected that these will be around for a few more years.

Ugh.
